Hallo Freunde!

The Yucatán Peninsula in Mexico is facing a significant environmental challenge: it has one of the highest rates of deforestation in the country, as vast areas of medium semi-evergreen forest and seasonally flooded lowland forest have been deforested for cattle ranching and forestry exploitation. In 2015, we set out to restore these forest ecosystems on the Peninsula by rehabilitating abandoned agricultural land. Today, a dedicated team at Plant-for-the-Planet A.C. is working to restore these ecosystems, planting up to 28,000 trees in a single day. We plant up to 51 native tree species, ensuring the species are closely matched to suitable sites based on analyses of soil and hydrological conditions. Most of our work takes places on large abandoned farms and cattle ranches next to the Calakmul Biosphere Reserve. We also collaborate with local farmers, government agencies such as the Ministry of Environment, Biodiversity, Climate Change, and Energy of the state of Campeche, as well as initiatives like “Production for Wellbeing” in the states of Campeche, Yucatan, and Quintana Roo. These programs aim to combine the conservation of natural resources with their sustainable use. Trees planted in collaboration with these partners increase tree cover across agricultural landscapes and contribute to sustainable livelihoods in apiculture and silvopasture.
